July 19, 2015 - La Jacotiere, Avranches, American Cemetery & Chambres d'Hotes La Gloriette

The view out from the front window of our room this morning.
 Our breakfast table.

Elaine elegantly gliding down the stairs for breakfast.

After drinking the hot tea it felt a little stuffy inside so headed outside to get some pictures.

This is a working farm also.

Another great feature of this B&B is that parking is free and you can easily walk to the free shuttle bus that takes you out to Mont St Michel.

The La Jacotiere is on a road that is closed to unauthorized vehicles.  The gate is just past the hotel so there are a quite a few cars that travel down the road and have to turn around and go back the other way.  The hotel puts a rope up across the drive way I believe to keep people from using their driveway as a turn around point.
The view of the breakfast area as we headed back up to gather our bags and head out.  The thing that seems so unusual to me is that you do not pay when you arrive but as you leave.  As we were talking to her as we checked out I let her know that we had found out about the B&B through Rick Steve's recommendation in his guide book.  She said that someone from his company had just been there within the last couple of weeks to check things out again.  She said that most guide books just call her and ask for money to put them in their books but not Rick Steve's.  They do not pay to be in his guide books.
We didn't drive very far before we made our first stop.  And when I say we didn't drive far I mean we could have walked there quite easily.
It was just a little road side stand that offered some local specialties.  Would you like some Soupe de Poissons?  We did ask what it was and it is fish soup.
We saw lots of bike riders on our travels today, which made us think of our friends back home.
We drove through some cute towns.

Roger had put a route into the gps that would not take us onto any highway.  I think there were times he regretted this when the road got really small.

But one of our treasure finds was in Avranches.  The Patton Monument was our second stop.
The soil and the trees are said to have been brought over from the United States.
The troops under General Patton Liberated Avranches from the German forces.

Gotta love the narrow and steep roads.
Third stop was a cemetery.  Isn't that what you do on vacation?

These crosses were for the nuns buried here.
I guess this is were old tires are put to rest also.

Found this on some of the headstones.  I think that it is a letter saying that they are going to be evicted from their resting place.
Not sure about this one.

We came into this little town and as we were driving through we noticed
that they were having some sort of event going on.
It was a city wide yard sale.
I loved this ladies stuff so much I had to come back and buy a couple of pieces.  It looks like we may have to buy a suitcase to get home.
Roger and Elaine purchased some sausages and a couple bottles of local wine.
There were all kinds of different vendors besides the yard sale people.
These were just some of the other sights we saw as we were on the road.

Another town we drove through had a street sale going on.
I can't believe they had it on the main road through town.  As you can see people don't seem to mind that they are in the middle of the road.  There was no way that Roger was going to stop at this one so we just shopped from the window of the car.

Where the heck are we headed.

This little church was on a corner out in the middle of nowhere.
We popped into a town.

Then back out into the beautiful country.
We had seen these fields all over and Roger stopped to check it out.
They are rapeseed, which is were canola oil comes from.
There was some type of ceremony going on as we entered the American Cemetery.

It is truly an emotional place to see all these crosses of those who gave their lives for others.
I love they acknowledgment that God knows who this person is.
A soldier from California.

I think that the American Cemetery is a more personal look at what the war was like from the soldiers view and actually gives some of their stories.  I personally like this more than the Caen museum.

We had another adventure trying to find Chambres d'Hôtes La Gloriette where we are staying tonight.

Once we got settled in we were off again to find someplace to eat.  Fred got a pot full of mussels.

This is one of the sets of steep narrow stairs we had to climb to get to our room.
Elaine and Fred are staying in a little house across the yard so they do not have to climb any stairs.  This is the view out of our window.
