July 16th - Church of San Giovanni in Laterano & the Holy Steps

Today we went to the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano.  The Lateran Obelisk is the tallest obelisk in the world today  and was brought from Egypt.

The Catholic church has named this "The Mother of All Churches".

We then headed across the street where the steps are that Jesus had walked on in Jerusalem.

Looking at all the statues of Mary & Jesus after his crucifixion make me think about how sad she must have been to see her son killed in such a way even knowing that he would be in heaven and that she would one day see him again.

We talked about how glad we are that we can talk directly to God and not have to go to confession.

We walked by all kinds of ruins as we went from one site to another.

We walked through the Colosseum.

We tried sneaking pictures of the Gladiators on our way to Circus Maximus (to me this was not worth seeing).

This is why you stay behind big vehicles and not try to get past them at an intersection.

We headed back to our hotel.  The fourth head is the hotel maid, he wanted to see what everyone was looking at.

After we cooled off, printed our boarding passes and paid for our transfer to the airport for the next day we headed to the restaurant that was downstairs.  Our lunch came with wine.

I thought I had made a big mistake by ordering a vegetable as my side but it helped the taste of the veal I got.

After lunch we had the hard task of drinking the wine that the hotel owner had brought us and getting our bags to the right weight of 20 Kilos for our checked bag and 10 Kilos for our carry-ons.  I got online and to check another bag would have been 40 Euros or $50 which  was not worth it to me.
