I highly recommend 69 Mannin Street B & B in Rome, which we booked through Priceline.com. The people there are very friendly and you feel like your staying in someones house instead of a hotel, even though it is not staffed 24 hours a day.
The Grand Hotel Europa in Naples was very close to the train station (just across the street from the side) and the streets of Naples is not someplace you want to be trying to get across the street with or without luggage anymore than you have to. The rooms were nice, breakfast was included and you had free wifi in the lobby area, which was nice. While we were there the garbage men were on strike so it was not a pretty place.
In Florence we stayed at the Hotel Curtatone, which we booked through Booking.com, was also nice and pretty close to the train station (it was an easy walk). The steps to go up to your room are pretty steep but there is a very small elevator that one person and their luggage can go up or 2 people with no luggage. It was also a nice hotel by the river.
The above hotels averaged about 69 Euros a night.
Things I would bring if coming in the warmer months.
1. A fan - that you could keep air moving on you either one you fan yourself or a little batter operated one
2. An umbrella to keep the sun off of you. If your in the shade it feels so much cooler.
