June 13th D-Day Museums

We were spoiled this morning and actually every morning that we were at the Anquetil house.  David picked up fresh bread and an oversized croissant that was buttery and delicious.  He showed us some original maps of Normandy from during the war.  We then headed for Caen and the Caen Memorial War Museum.  It was full of many war stories and the occupation by the axis forces.

From there we headed to the American Cemetery for the fallen war heroes of the D-Day invasion and WWII European theater.  This was a lot more personal and to me more touching.  The other museum had so much information, movies and things to see it would take you a whole day to go through it.  This one had some stories and personal mementos from American soldiers who both lived and died during the battle at Normandy.

It was very beautiful and peaceful walking through the cemetery.  Everyone was respectful & quiet.

When we left there we drove by Omaha beach which was close by.  We then headed to Pointe du Hoc which was full of German Bunkers.  All around the bunkers there were huge pits where bombs had been dropped on them, of course now they are green with grass and don't show as much of the harsh reality of war.  It really was a lot to take in.
