The last minute city wide party preparations have begun for the São João festivities. They were out power-washing the walkways early now the delivery trucks are bringing in basil plants, beer kegs and propane bottles.
What a backdrop for breakfast.
We decided to wander some of the little walkways back to the apartment. None of them run all the way through but just meander around until finally (hopefully) you come out down by the river,
which we did.
The TV station was doing a taping under our window.
We decided to go to the World of Discovery. This friendly dinosaur was right across the street so you know we couldn't pass up a photo op.
They explained to us how different devices were used to navigate the seas by day and by night.
These were used by lining up the stars.
You could press on a year and the globe would change to the maps from that time.
They had a lot of monitors that you could read to find out more information about history, sailing and navigation.
They had an area that represented the hull of a ship and what items you might have found in them.
The kitchen.
Sleeping quarters and people that didn't make the voyage due to the plague.
This room showed the ship builders. We also got on a boat that took you too some of the new lands that were discovered.
We ended up eating a buffet lunch there that included all types of food from different places that the navigators had gone to.
I wasn't as adventurous with the food since a lot of it had some type of seafood in it. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food. I really liked the plates and placemats themselves.
I thought this buildings wall covering was interesting.
We figure that this little bar must be going to be manned by a little person, since there is no way any of us could stand up inside.
We have never seen a VW pick-up
While we were gone they brought in the barges that the fireworks will be shot up from. They say you will have good luck if a bird poops on you, well lets just say Roger is going to be one lucky guy. Just as we left the apartment this morning a bird pooped on his shirt so he went back upstairs and rinsed it off. Then while we were walking back he got hit again, this time twice. He was not the only one though, Elaine and I both got it too. We are not sure what happened but there must have been a flock that had flown over us and let it all out because another lady got it in the eye and the car that we were all next to looked like it had been bombed.
We had another elevator right next door, Fred was wishing it would have been an elevator to the apartment.
This plaza beneath the apartment was usually filled with tables and chairs for the cafe but not today. Everything was cleared out so that they could have a sound system set up to play the music for the firework show and then the after party.
They also closed the gate early that leads up to the homes above. To keep all the revelers out.
There were food & drink booths along the river.
There were also more food stations up all the different walk ways. At least this pig lost his head before being roasted. They were also selling plastic hammers that squeak every time they are used. Let's just say there was a lot of squeaking going on all night.
The longest line that we ever saw was for the ATM.
We finally decided on a doner kabob.
People decorated their balconies all over town.
I take that back about the lines. This booth had the longest line. Making fresh bread wrapped sausage. As it started getting dark. The crowds started coming. You can see another stage up at the top of the hill.
There were a lot of paper lanterns going up all over the city throughout the evening.
I had bought a hammer earlier when we got dinner and the Elaine got one once we saw what it was all about. We decided to watch the fireworks through the window since the crowds were getting pretty big and we could have a birds eye view of everything.
It was the best fireworks show that I have ever seen. Now the music went on all night, I guess I should say all morning. The music was still playing and people were still dancing when we left the apartment at 7:00 am.
