June 16, 2015 Lisbon Tram #28 and the Alfama

Today we went up in the Santa Justa Lift since that was included in the Yellow Bus pass.  I was able to then get a good picture of the back sided of the Convento do Carmo.  Roger did brave it out and climbed the stairs to the top but he was pretty clammy when he came back down.  I personally would not spend the 5 Euros it would cost to go up the lift and to climb the stairs to the top when there are plenty of other spots in the city that you can get that view without paying.  But we can now say been there, done that.
After working our way back down the hill we headed over to catch the #28 trolley that would take us up to the Alfama area.
As you can see we were not the only ones wanting to get on the trolley.
Fred waited patiently on the bench until we  were about ready to board.
Taking advantage of the ride up to rest.
Once we got off the trolley we had to climb some very steep roads to get up to the Sao Jorge Castelo.  Roger had to take a picture of the cat on his way up.  Don't worry we left Fred at the bottom in the shade with a cold glass of beer.
There are a lot of musicians around town but there is not usually a whole band playing.  I loved the washboard.

There were some shops right at the entrance.

Elaine checked out the ice-cream shop.
But decided to go with the Sardines, which Fred and Roger helped her eat.
Roger had a dark beer.
And I had the Sangria.

We then separated from Elaine and Fred.  They took the trolley and we decided to walk.  The plan was too meet back at the apartment. The traffic up and down these streets was crazy. The roads are very narrow.

The sidewalks are also very narrow in most spots.

And did I say steep.  I should have taken out extra life insurance on Roger before we left home.
Maybe this is a little better perspective.
What did we climb up this hill to see?  Sao Miguel Parish
There were more beautiful views from the terrace out in front.
What goes up must come down.  It may be easier on the heart but it is much harder on the legs.  I think we are going to have a hard time walking tomorrow.
I know you are probably getting tired of seeing pictures of the roof tops but to see them in person is beautiful.  But also notice that we have to get to the very bottom of this hill.  See that water out there? Ya that is close to were we need to go.
Yes that is regular small blue tiles all over the front of that home.  There aren't as many satellite dishes as the old school looking antennas on most of the homes that we saw.  We or at least I enjoyed walking through this older residential part of town.  Roger let me lead the way.  I think that was so that if he got me lost I wouldn't yell at him but actually I got us back to the apartment before Fred and Elaine got back down the hill.
