July 18, 2014 - Over the River & Through the Woods (Newport Oregon, Rogue Brewery & Newport Belle

This morning Roger went to the doughnut shop.  We had passed by this place yesterday that advertised blueberry fritters and that is what he was set on having for breakfast.  When he came back to the hotel he could see hot air balloons rising just behind our hotel.

The air was really bad as we left Bend from the fires that were blazing in the area.  The beautiful snow capped mountains were now hard to see.

Today we traveled on another Oregon scenic byway, called Over the Rivers & Through the Woods, on our way to Newport.

“Why”, you ask that we decided to go to Newport, Oregon.  To visit the Rogue Brewery and Distillery.  Luckily we got out with only purchasing 3 different beers.

Tonight we are staying at the Newport Belle which just so happens to be just 700 feet from the distillery.  Even though check in isn’t until 4 o’clock we couldn’t resist going over to see the place we would call home tonight.

On our drive over we had seen billboards proclaiming Mo’s as having the best clam chowder in the Nation.  We decided that that is where we would have lunch.  Well, to Roger the clam chowder is potato soup with some clams.

I am not a fish person so I went with the grilled cheese sandwich.

I had seen a homemade peanut butter cream pie on the dessert list and did not want to be to full for dessert.  I would not order that again either.  It was ok but not good.

Would not want his job.

After lunch we walked Bay St. which has touristy shops and fish processing warehouses.  So there are some very stinky areas that even now make my nose cringe just thinking about them.  But I did find a shop that had something I “needed”, so I did buy a couple of purses.

After walking up the street as far as Roger was willing to walk we headed back to the car and back over to the Marina.

When we got to the Rogue Distillery the train that takes you to the different locations on the tour was out in front.  We only tasted the Hazelnut Spice Rum and I did not care for it.  There was barely a hint of hazelnut after the burning in my mouth stopped.

4 o'clock finally rolled around and we could check in to our B & B. Michael greeted us at the door along with their 3 cute dogs.

When you come in you go directly up the stairs (pack light).

Nancy was at the top of the stairs to greet us and give us a tour. This is the dinning and living area.

The snack breakfast area for the guests.

Beverage area with tea, cocoa, wine, sodas & water.  If we wanted a beer they only ask a $2 donation.

The solarium which has a beautiful view of the bridge.

Michael then showed us to our room.

We are staying in the Pilot House room.  There is also a refrigerator in our room stocked with bottled water.  They also provide ear plugs, eye masks,  bathrobes and a throw blanket.

After Roger took a nap and I enjoyed reading in the solarium we walked over to Rogue for some onion rings and a flight of beer.

The view from the  restaurant was pretty much the same from the Belle.

He added two more bottles of beer to his growing collection.

You walk through the brewery to get to the gift shop and the restaurant.

I am not sure if this is part of the bar or if it is the employee breakroom.  As we walked back to the boat we met up with another couple that have been traveling in their RV across America but live in the Bay area.

We had fun talking with the other two couples, that are staying on the Belle, in the living room so by the time we went to our room it was almost midnight.
